Other topical anesthetics

If cheap and easy methods aren’t enough, and my list of recommended topical anesthetics did not cut it, you might consider having a custom-made product put together at a compounding pharmacy.

As mentioned earlier, it is very difficult for most to get 100% anesthesia using topicals, but most people don’t need the pain eliminated, just reduced. For those looking for additional options, here are some reader contributions.

Compounded tetracaine gel

In March, 1999, Mikki sent along this good news:

Dear Andrea, The product is sooo exciting that I found out about….I have used it on my upper lip area, which as we all know can be very painful!! It’s used like EMLA, but is a clear product with no occlusion dressing needed… and can be applied in a thin coat. The other good news is that you only need to put it on about 1/2 hr. before treatment and it lasts much longer than EMLA ever thought of lasting! I found out about this thru "Allure" magazine, they had an article about this Beverly Hills compound Pharm. that made this product especially for electrol. or other treatments using EMLA and that this product was twice as strong. Well, guess what it IS! I finally have been able to get my upper lip done with very little difficulty.

What you have to do to get this is have your Dr. write a script which can be faxed directly to the pharmacy, call them first and place the order, for which you have to pay $40. up front, before they will fill the order. Then you have your Dr. send a script for the following: 20% benzocaine, 6% lidocaine, and 4% tetracaine in organo gel. That’s it, that’s all you have to do…when you call they know what your talking about if you just mention the "tetracaine gel". The staff are very nice their and very helpful too!.
