Choosing an electrologist

Posted on April 25, 2010

Choosing an electrologist

Choosing an electrologist will be the most important factor in how long completion takes, how much it costs, how comfortable treatment is, and how your skin fares. Choose carefully!

General

Electrologists are salespeople, too.

They are trying to sell you treatments that can cost you a lot of money. They have to make payments on equipment and office space. That's a lot of sales they have to make.

Can you afford it if you have no long-term results?

Clinical studies suggest that 7% to 10% of clients don't respond to treatment. If you cannot afford to risk your time or money if results aren't satisfactory, you should stick with a cheaper method.

Initial research

Get personal recommendations

This is the most reliable way to find someone. Try asking:

  • your friends and relatives. They might go or might know someone who goes.
  • your doctor. Ask if she or he knows any clients who are done and are happy.

Find advertised practices

It's much better to get a personal recommendation from a satisfied consumer, but

  • Yellow pages: Look under "electrolysis" and under "hair removal"
  • Internet: type in "electrolysis" and the the name of towns near you
  • Trade associations (see the list under Qualifications below.

Keep records

If you learn about an electrologist from a print advertisement, keep a copy of the ad (put the date and where it ran on the ad). If you hear something on TV or radio, note the date, station and program, along with any claims. If you try to get a refund later, you'll need this information.

Calling for information

Get some information over the phone

Most places will not give much information over the phone, especially prices. This is not because they're evasive, but because they want to see you before discussing treatment options. Take notes. Get the name of anyone you talk to and note the date. You should get the following information over the phone:

  • Make sure they do needle electrolysis. Some places claiming to use electrolysis really use electric tweezers or photoepilators.
  • Which of the three types of electrolysis are available (galvanic, thermolysis, or blend) and how long they've used each at their practice
  • Brand and model of equipment, and how long they've had it
  • Number of clients they've treated and number of years in business
  • Their electrolysis training and qualifications (see below)

Qualifications

Over one-third of the US states have no certification requirement for electrologists, and states that do regulate electrolysis each have widely varying standards for certification. Electrologists should have a current, dated certificate on display where required.

State license

They should have one if the state where they practice regulates electrolysis (see State regulations)

Training

They should have a certification from an accredited electrology school. Instructors are even better.

Professional associations

Many belong to a professional trade group. The largest trade groups include:

  • AEA (American Electrology Association)
  • IGPE (International Guild of Professional Electrologists)
  • SCME (Society of Clinical and Medical Electrologists)
  • ESNE (Electrolysis Society of the Northeast)
  • IBE (International Board of Electrologists)
  • COPE (Canadian Organization of Professional Electrologists)

Common national certifications include:

  • CPE (Certified Professional Electrologist) a certification governed by the AEA
  • CME (Certified Clinical Electrologist), a certification governed by SCME
  • RE (Registered Electrologist)

Set up a consultation

Ask if a consultation and test patch are free. They usually are.

During the consultation

Check out the office

Is it clean and organized? Most places have a waiting room and private booths or offices in the back. Are the workers clean, too? Is everyone there professional and courteous? If not, you should look elsewhere.

Make sure they are sanitary

Unsterile conditions can lead to spread of infection and warts, and possibly blood-borne disease (although there are no documented cases of blood-borne disease transmission via electrolysis).

  • Electrologist should wash hands before and after each treatment.
  • The Center for Disease Control recommends electrologists use disposable gloves during treatments. Many also use masks, which also help protect you against infection and the possibility of disease.
  • Treatment tables should be sanitized or appropriately redraped with paper or linen before each treatment.
  • Do they sterilize equipment in an autoclave?
  • Do they use disposable probes? If not, why?

How does the treatment feel?

You should never have the feeling that a hair is being plucked or tweezed during treatment.

Do you like the practitioner?

You should get along. It can help to think that you are a team working together toward a common goal, since it's very important to have a good rapport and an atmosphere of trust. If you don't feel you can express your concerns about treatment to him or her, you might try someone else.

Talk to clients (if possible)

Ask to talk with clients who used the same practitioner who are done and happy. Clients should be at least 6 and preferably 12 months past their final treatment. Note: This option is not always available, as many clients of hair removal want to keep their visits private. That's why it's best to get a personal recommendation from a friend or loved one-- most practitioners do not have clients on hand who are willing to speak about their satisfaction, and no reputable practitioner will divulge any information about clients without first getting client permission.

Meet the person who will give you treatment

If more than one electrologist works there, will you always be seeing one person? If not, find out the credentials of others who may be working on you. Get all the answers you require from the person who will be performing the procedure if possible. At the very least, meet them in person.

Check on pain relief

If you are concerned about pain or especially sensitive to it, ask them if they have pain relief available if you need it. If they try to tell you it's painless, be very suspicious.

Discuss costs

Usually, electrolysis costs are calculated by the minute. Many places offer 15-minute increments, and the longer the session, the less it is per minute. For instance, 15 minutes might cost $25, a half hour might cost $40, and an hour might be $60. Some places allow you to pay up front for a block of treatment time that you can use as needed. These blocks can offer additional savings.

Discuss treatment schedule

You should find out:

  • How often you'll need to come in
  • About how long each treatment will take (subsequent treatments may require less time)
  • Roughly how many treatments in total you might need before you won't need to come in any more. They will probably give you a range, since it's hard to predict.

Ask about office policies

You should also find out:

  • Office days and hours (especially weekend and evening options if your schedule requires)
  • Policy for missed appointments

Ask about post-treatment

Find out what to expect after you've been treated:

  • Ask if you will need to do anything special to your skin after treatment.
  • Get a written list of possible side effects and the doctor's assessment of your skin type.
  • Ask how long it will be before you can clear any new growth or regrowth.

Get it in writing

In addition to getting answers on your Electrolysis consultation form, get a written guarantee of any results they promise. If they are willing to promise permanent results in writing, you may be able to get a refund if you aren't satisfied.

Take your time

Don't let them rush you. If you don't get all your questions answered to your complete satisfaction, they don't deserve your trust or your money.

Get more than one consultation

Every electrologist is different. If you have more than one option near you, you should check all of them out before committing.

Signing up for blocks

Do not sign up for a block until you've had a few treatments. It makes it difficult for you to stop in the middle if you become dissatisfied with them, and if you aren't satisfied, it's harder to get money back once they have it. Wait to see how your skin responds, and if possible, wait until you can see how well it's working.

Read what you sign

Carefully read any waivers or disclaimers you are required to sign, and keep a copy for yourself. Some offices will require clients to sign an "informed consent" form, meaning you know the risks and don't care. Clients should read forms very carefully to ensure that they are not waiving their legal rights in the event of any complications, either short-term or long-term. If in doubt, get legal advice.

During full treatment

Keep written records

If at all possible, pay with check or credit card, not cash. Have them sign and date a receipt with each payment.

Good electrologists keep a log of your treatment dates and times, and many will give you a card with the same information. If they don't provide this, you should keep your own record and make sure it matches their records after each session. This is especially important if you have bought a block of time.

Give the practitioner feedback

Don't be afraid to tell her or him to stop if it hurts. You might be getting overtreated, which can lead to injury.

Managing hair removal pain

Pain management tips

Introduction

Businesses that sell rotary tweezers, electrolysis, waxing, and laser sometimes use euphemisms like "discomfort" and "sensation," but I'm here to tell you hair removal occasionally hurts! Not all the time, but every now and then, YEOW! Luckily, there are plenty of ways to deal with it.

> Purchase LMX-5 or other pain medications online here without a prescription.

Disclaimer

A pain medication which works perfectly for one consumer may not work at all for another.

The following is excerpted from my legal information page:

The information contained in hairfacts.com is presented for the purpose of educating consumers on hair removal topics. Nothing contained in hairfacts.com is intended to be instructional for medical diagnosis or treatment. The information should not be considered complete, nor should it be relied on to suggest a course of treatment for a particular individual.

Below are two letters I received, showing that the same product can be considered ideal by one consumer and worthless by another:

Letter #1

I appreciate your site. However, the information on Ela Max 5 in your topical anti pain section is misleading. After using EMLA for almost a year, I tried Ela Max 5 in my last electrolysis session based soley on the information you provided on your site, rating Ela Max as (or almost as) effective as EMLA. Not only did Ela Max 5 not work nearly as effectively as EMLA, but it DIDN'T WORK AT ALL. This cost me pain, and over $100 for the product and an electrolysis session which I had to cut short by 45 minutes because the pain was unbearable. My electrolygist informed me that of all the clients she's had, only one found Ela Max 5 helped at all. Everyone else who used it found it of not help whatsoever. While I think your intentions are good, you are doing a disservice by providing such misinformation which causes people pain and expense.

Letter #2

The ELA-Max 5 worked great! It was just as effective as EMLA and it had several advantages. First, ELA-Max 5 does not need a plastic covering like EMLA does. And secondly, you only have to put the ELA-Max 5 on about 30 minutes before treatment. I began to feel its numbing effects in about 15 minutes with the full benefit in about 30 minutes. When I used EMLA, I had to put it on at least 1 hour before treatment to get the full benefit. Another secondary benefit of the ELA-Max 5 is its effects seemed to last longer on me. So there was no worry about losing protection before a session was over. One caution though, make sure you put the ELA-Max5 on thick. If you are too stingy, it will not work as well.

Two consumers, two completely opposite reactions. Pain is a highly subjective matter. While I list pain relief products recommended by consumers and compare them based on consumer feedback and medical data, I make absolutely no guarantee that any product mentioned in this section will work for you or will work better or worse for you than another product.

Choosing a light-based hair removal practitioner

Posted on April 25, 2010
General

Doctors and practitioners are salespeople, too.

They are trying to sell you something that will cost you a lot of money. They have to make payments on a laser costing tens of thousands of dollars. That's a lot of sales they have to make.

Doctors are not perfect.

Doctors can also be fooled by marketing hype-- they are bombarded with advertisements for lasers. Laser sales reps take them to lunch or to a sports event and chat about how great their system is, and how much money they could make. Doctors hear rumors and believe them, too. I know of several good, trustworthy physicians who bought SoftLight machines when they came out, believing they were permanent. Physicians can also be too busy/lazy to read more than an abstract of a clinical study. I am constantly amazed at how trusting some people are of physicians, taking their word as gospel.

Some laser technicians are unqualified and could damage your skin

It's safest to go to a physician, preferably a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Your procedure is likely to be safer and more effective when done under medical supervision. Unqualified prctitioners have been known to cause serious skin damage on unsuspecting clients.

Can you afford it if you have no long-term results?

Laser doesn't work for everyone. Be willing to write off the time and money you are going to spend. This is vital. Some people are willing to take a chance on unproven technology, and we all benefit from these people. There are a few lucky people who have enough disposable income to try procedures that are still being perfected, even though they may end up with nothing to show for it. If you cannot afford to risk your time, money, or complexion on unproven methods, you need to think seriously about whether laser is right for you.

Calling for information

Keep records

If you learn about a laser practice from a print advertisement, keep a copy of the ad (put the date and where it ran on the ad). If you hear something on TV or radio, note the date, station and program, along with any claims. If you try to get a refund later, you'll need this information.

Get some information over the phone

Most places will not give much information over the phone, especially prices. This is not because they're evasive, but because they want to see you before discussing treatment options. Take notes. Get the name of anyone you talk to and note the date. You should get the following information over the phone:

  • Brand and model of laser used and how long they've used it at their practice
  • Number of clients they've treated
  • Name and specialty of doctor who supervises treatment
  • Also, ask if consultation and test patch are free.

Set up a consultation

Ask who will be consulting with you during your appointment. Insist on consulting directly with the supervising physician.

Set up a test patch

You should make sure the test patch is done by the same person who will be treating you.

  • Ask what their medical or technical training is.
  • Ask how long they have been using this particular machine, and how many clients they've treated.
  • Ask how much hair growth you should have before the test patch is done.
  • Also ask if there is anything else you should or should not do to your skin before coming in.
During the consultation

Check out the office

Is it clean and organized? Are the workers clean, too? Is everyone there professional and courteous? If not, you should look elsewhere.

Ask questions

Here's a list of questions to print out and take with you: Consultation form

Get a test patch done

Always ask for a test patch before signing up for treatment. Ask how much a test patch will cost and make a note of it. I would strongly urge you get this done in an area others won't see.

Make them prove their claims

Ask for clinical studies that prove their claims, especially if they tell you it is permanent. They will say you wouldn't understand. They will say it's too technical. They will hand you sales materials and promotional literature. They will hand you a copy of a fashion magazine article. Insist on getting a hard copy of a recently published clinical study about their laser results.

Talk to clients (if possible)

Ask to talk with clients who used the same laser and same practitioner who are done and happy. Clients should be at least 6 and preferably 12 months past their final treatment, unless you are only interested in maintenance treatments.

Try to get a doctor, not a technician. Get all the answers you require from the doctor who will be performing the procedure. If the doctor has a technician perform treatment, insist on finding out the credentials of the person who will be treating you. Ask if they have personally been treated by that particular machine. Ask if they felt any pain, how long did it take for their hair to fall out, did they have any side effects, and how long did it last.

Check on pain relief

If you are concerned about pain or especially sensitive to it, ask them if they have pain relief available if you need it. If they try to tell you it's painless, be very suspicious.

Discuss costs

Usually, laser costs are determined by body area. The larger the area, the more the cost. Your costs might be higher if you have thicker unwanted hair. There's usually a base cost for a single treatment of a body area, but they will usually suggest multiple treatments. Usually, these treatment blocks are at a reduced rate per treatment compared to the single treatment price.

Discuss treatment schedule

You should find out:

  • How often you'll need to come in
  • How long each treatment will take (subsequent treatments may require less time)
  • How many treatments in total you will need before you won't need to come in any more.

Ask about office policies

You should also find out:

  • Office days and hours
  • Policy for missed appointments

Ask about post-treatment

Find out what to expect after you've been treated:

  • Ask how long it will take for the hair to fall out (it often takes a few days).
  • Ask if you will need to do anything special to your skin after treatment.
  • Get a written list of possible side effects and the doctor's assessment of your skin type.
  • Ask how long it will be before you can clear any new growth or regrowth.

Get it in writing

In addition to getting answers on your Consultation form, get a written guarantee of any results they promise. If they are willing to promise permanent results in writing, you may be able to get a refund if you aren't satisfied.

Take your time

Don't let them rush you. If you don't get all your questions answered to your complete satisfaction, they don't deserve your trust or your money.

Get more than one consultation

Every laser place is different. If you have more than one option near you, you should check all of them out before committing.

Signing up

Do not sign up for treatment at the consultation! Wait to see how your skin responds to the test patch, and take home the info you get to do more research.

Read what you sign

Again, don't sign anything on the spot. Take it home and look at it. Carefully read any waivers or disclaimers you are required to sign, and keep a copy for yourself. Most clinics will require clients to sign an "informed consent" form, meaning you know the risks and don't care. Clients should read forms very carefully to ensure that they are not waiving their legal rights in the event of any complications, either short-term or long-term. If in doubt, get legal advice.

Keep written records

If at all possible, pay with check or credit card, not cash. Every time you pay, get a written receipt with your payment that describes the terms of your agreement and number of treatments you will receive. Have them sign and date the receipt. Some clients have been able to get in writing that they will continue to get treated for free if they still have hair after their last session of their agreement. Push for a deal like this, rather than a few treatments and you're on your own.

Understand the contract

Beware of multi-treatment deals, especially ones requiring payment in advance. It makes it difficult for you to stop in the middle if you become dissatisfied with them, and if you aren't satisfied, it's harder to get money back once they have it. Ask them to give you a money-back guarantee in writing. Treatments typically are sold in packages of 2 to 6, over a period of one year. Multiple treatment is a tricky thing-- all hair removal methods require multiple treatments over time. However, it is difficult to discern the difference between regrowth and new growth, and this confusion can be used to fool consumers into coming back for treatment after treatment, until they finally run out of patience or money.

Wait until you've had at least three test patches done, and wait 12-14 days after they've been done to make sure it works, before deciding which method and company you'll choose. If you're still unsure, get more test patches done, even with the same people if necessary.

During full treatment

Wear goggles

Make sure they use eye protection, on you and themselves. Lasers can cause serious eye injury.

Give them feedback

Don't be afraid to tell them to stop if it hurts. You might be getting overtreated, which can lead to injury.

Hair removal scams and misinformation

Hair removal scams and misinformation

I'll be adding a lot more on this, but the main scams and dubious devices in the world of hair removal are:

Electric tweezers

"Transdermal electrolysis" (aka "transcutaneous hair removal")

"Hair growth inhibitors" and other over-the-counter topical products

Overpromise (sales pitches that exaggerate results). This includes almost anything sold on television.

Sadly, there are too many scams to list them all here. If you aren't sure if a product or device is legitimate, visit my hair removal forum.

Hairfacts: dubious achievement all-stars

The following companies make my list of all-time most dubious companies and products involved in hair removal, in descending order, starting with the all-time worst:

Brand (maker): The Tricho System (Tricho System)
Type of device: X-ray epilator
Guilty party: Albert Geyser, M.D.

This device removed hair with x-rays. It was used in the 20's and 30's by beauticians throughout the US and was promoted as safe and permanent by its inventor. By the 1940's it became clear that the device was causing cancer, disfigurement, and death in patients. It was subsequently banned in the US, just a little too late for the unsuspecting consumers injured and killed by this quack device.

Brand (maker): IGIA (Tactica International)
Type of device: Electric tweezer
Guilty party: Avi Sivan

In the early 1990's, this company began selling millions of IGIA electric tweezers through a barrage of infomercials and catalogs, claiming the device was permanent without adequate scientific substantiation. In 1997 alone, Tactica sold over $75 million of IGIA electric tweezers. Tactica continues to market IGIA electric tweezers, even though there is no published medical proof they can work as claimed.

Brand: Global Electrolysis Supply
Type of device: All (see below)
Guilty parties: Chris Williams/“Deb Shatz”/”Greg Manning”/"Chris Limon"/"Gregg Mannon"

This dubious distributor operates from mail drop boxes in North America and Europe and sells just about every bogus hair removal device out there:

Epitron ( Electric tweezer)
AAVEXX ( "Transdermal")
Laser Perm (Home use laser!)
Micro 1000 ("Microlysis")
V2R-G (Overpriced probe electrolysis)
Psoret ( Topical)
Hammond and Weis Liquid Electrolysis ( Topical)

Brand (maker): Ultra Hair Away (Victoria Bodyworks)
Type of device: Topical solution
Guilty party: “Geoff MacKay”

He's a spammer. He's a pornographer. And he's a scam artist selling a bogus "hair inhibitor" with no proof it can work as claimed. He's also gummed up most web search engines by using multiple domains to promote his snake oil.

Brand (maker): Removatron (Removatron International)
Type of device: Electric tweezer
Guilty party: Fred Goodman

This electric tweezer has been sold as a method of permanent hair removal for 25 years, primarily to beauticians and cosmetologists as a franchise. These small businesses then use the unproven device until clients run out of patience or money, thus ruining their credibility. In a landmark case, Removatron was charged with deceptive ad practices in 1985 by the US Federal Trade Commission.Undaunted, Removatron continues to promote the device as permanent, even though the the US Food and Drug Administration stated in 1998 that there is no statistically significant evidence that Removatron can achieve permanent hair removal.

Brand (maker): Finally Free/Forever Free (Mehl/Biophile)
Type of device: Electric tweezer
Guilty party: Thomas Mehl

Sort of a poor man's IGIA, Thomas Mehl sold his home use electric tweezers under such company names as Classy Lady by Mehl of Puerto Rico. After a long career selling electric tweezers as permanent under the names Finally Free and Forever Free, Mehl branched out into lasers. With his money from ripping people off with electric tweezers, he bought his way into the laser hair removal industry His Mehl/Biophile sold a ruby laser called Chromos 694 and attempted to cash in with bogus "patent infringement" suits against legitimate laser manufacturers. After the suits were dismissed and Mehl's inflated stock price fell, the company defaulted on loans and began repossessing lasers from doctors. Even though Thomas Mehl is now dead, the legacy of his electric tweezer scam lives on under new management.

Brand (maker): Super Phaser Gold (Rejuvenu/International Hair Removal Systems (IHRS))
Type of device: Electric tweezer "Transdermal electrolysis" "transcutaneous hair removal"
Guilty parties: Lee Cole/"Mark H. Chandler"

In the late 1990's, they changed the company name to International Hair Removal Systems and began offering an electrified patch as "transcutaneous electrolysis." FDA has not evaluated claims of permanence using the "transdermal" or "transcutaneous" methods, and there is no proof either the Q-Tip or patch methods can result in permanent hair removal. Also sold as TransQ-2000 and Pinnacle 1250.

Brand (maker): Guaranty Hair Removal/GHR (Stephens Manufacturing)
Type of device: Electric tweezer
Guilty parties: Judith Stephens/“Katherine Cook”

Judith Stephens has been selling an electric tweezer called GHR since the 1980's. She sued a trade group which tried to get the word out about her bogus credentials and claims. In the late 1990's Stephens teamed up with the person hosting her websites to promote GHR through a site designed to look like a consumer website, called "Kitty's Consumer Beware." These two promote the GHR device with fake "clinical data" of disputed authorship.

Brand (maker): TE 629 (American Hair Removal System (AHRS))
Type of device: Electric tweezer "Transdermal electrolysis"
Guilty parties: Lee Cole/"Mark H. Chandler"

This team of quacks started off selling an electric tweezer, but they soon modified the device to use an electrified Q-Tip (honest). They called this method "transdermal electrolysis." There is no proof the electric Q-Tip can cause permanent hair removal.

Brand (maker): ThermaLight 2000 (Jennifer Maxx)
Type of device: Photoepilator
Guilty party: Jennifer Maxx

This photoepilator technology was first introduced in 1970. In the subsequent 30 years, there has been no published proof they can achieve permanent hair removal as claimed. In the late 1990's Jennifer Maxx began selling her photoepilator as a franchise, which means the number of consumers who will be ripped off will increase significantly.

Brand (maker): Lasertrolysis (Proteus)
Type of scam: Laser marketing ploy
Guilty party: Wally Roberts

Not so much a quack device as a quack marketing term. This guy has been working to blur the important distinctions between laser hair removal and electrolysis for the last few decades. He trademarked the term "lasertrolysis" and has taken a "grant" from a laser manufacturer to promote laser through an electrolysis trade organization. His latest push is to make these medical lasers available to cosmetologists with little or no medical training. See Tricho System, above.

Brand (maker): D'Plume XXIII (Carol Block )
Type of device: Photoepilator
Guilty party: Carol Block

Following the failure of original photoepilator Omicron in the early 1970's Carol Block purchased the machines and began selling them as franchises. Despite company claims, there is no published proof the device can achieve permanent hair removal.

Brand (maker): MW-2000 (MW Medical)
Type of device: Microwave
Guilty party:

This device was brought to market with limited data on safety and effectiveness. In fact, it is illegal to use on facial areas until the company submits more data to FDA. Their dire financial condition stated in their annual report published in April 2001 suggests this company may not be around long enough to see clearance for use on facial areas.

Brand (maker): SoftLight (ThermoLase)
Type of device: Laser
Guilty party: Thermo Electron

The first laser available in the US was introduced without adequate clinical testing and marketed as permanent. After medical articles and lawsuits came out claiming the device did not achieve permanent hair removal, the company folded its operations.

Brand (maker): Epil-Stop (Tactica International)
Type of scam: Topical preparation
Guilty party: Avi Sivan

Tactica's second entry on the list is a cream depilatory and "hair inhibitor" that not only didn't work, it caused severe burns in enough consumers that it was necessary to do a recall.

Brand: Kalo (Nisim)
Type of device: Topical preparation
Guilty party: Tom Davidson

This is another Canadian company selling a topical "hair inhibitor" with no published clinical proof it can work as claimed.

Brand: Vector (Divine Skin Solutions)
Type of device: Electric tweezer
Guilty party: Valery Smirnov "Leo Smirnov"/"Leo Smironov"/"John Gubin"/Valery Smirnov"/"Paul Condering"

This electric tweezer claims it's permanent and appproved by FDA. Both claims are illegal.

Are you a victim of hair removal fraud?

Ripped off in a hair removal scam?

One of the main reasons I put up this site was to get the word out about scams.

If you feel you were misled by someone about a hair removal device or treatments you paid for, I recommend:

Filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

This is the best place to submit information, since they coordinate complaints with several other local, state, and federal law enforcement entities and regulatory bodies.

Contacting me.

I am currently collecting information on several hair removal scams for various types of legal action. You may have some important evidence that can help stop scam artists.

Although it's generally very difficult, if you have certain items in writing, I might even be able to help you get out of a contract or possibly get your money back in some cases.

At the very least, you can help someone else avoid getting ripped off.
