On June 24, 1997, Polytec PI received FDA clearance to market a long-pulse and Q-switched ruby laser called LaseAway for hair removal. The device was found to be substantially equivalent to the Palomar EpiLaser and Sharplan EpiTouch ruby lasers cleared for hair removal in March 1997, and was the fourth LP ruby to be cleared. FDA 510(k) Docket K971193 lists the contact as Susan D. Goldstein-Falk, with Mark Boardman listed as manager of medical laser products.
The device was sometimes referred to as the Lambda LaseAway and had other dermatologiucal applications.
Medical laser industry: "surprisingly unprofessional"
On 25 September 2001, Brian Lula, President of Polytec PI, wrote the following in a letter to hairfacts:
You are to be congratulated on a very informative website. Wish it was around when we were marketing our ruby laser product. To be current, we would ask for one correction to be made. We pulled out of the medical laser business in 1998 due to its surprisingly unprofessional selling environment and no longer manufacture the LaseAway Ruby laser product.
As with several other hair removal laser manufacturers, including Thermo Electron and Coherent, Polytec chose to focus their energies on ultra high-tech products.
This device is not related to the device marketed by Silver Creek Medical under the name LaseAway, nor is it associated with the Alabama laser practioner who owns the domain name LaseAway.
